Art Law

Art law is not a legal discipline of its own, but embraces various legal areas, such as copyright law, contract law, inheritance law, tax law, company law, trust law, etc. Knowledge and competence in dealing with the various laws associated with art are required as well as an understanding of their interdependence. Satisfactory solutions to different legal matters and problems connected with art and photography demand, in addition, a profound familiarity with the national and international art trade and its customs. In dealing with the various parties in such relationships between connoisseurs and commercial interests, there is a requirement for an increased social awareness, a communicative competence and also interdisciplinary capabilities.

Our activities in this particular area include legal advice in all matters:

  • commercial art trade and auctions
  • museums
  • loans to museums and art galleries, contracts
  • drafting of exclusivity agreements between artists and art dealers
  • insurance, transport of art
  • looted and spoliated art, counterfeiting
  • restorations
  • valuations
  • art collections
